5 Tips for Choosing a Bible Study

How to choose a Bible study

Our team has come up with five tips to help the choice a little easier. These are things to keep in mind as you choose a Bible study.

1. Do you want text or topical Bible study?

Decide whether you are looking for a study that focuses on a specific part of the Bible or on a particular topic. There is a  difference in the approach these types of studies take. Textual Bible study takes a look at a specific part of the Bible… either a book or a part of the book and digs into it more deeply. A topical Bible study teaches about a certain topic. Consider what you believe the Lord wants you to learn about. It should help narrow the field a bit.

2. Consider your Bible knowledge.

Are you a brand new Christian? Then choose a Bible study of basic lessons with simple questions that are easy to understand for beginners. If you have been studying awhile, don’t be afraid to dive a little deeper in your study. There are studies out there for both ends of the spectrum and everything in between. If in doubt, check out reviews of the studies to see what people have to say about the intensity of the study.

3. Explore new Bible study authors.

Take a look at some authors you’ve never used before. We all have our favorites, but new voices can bring a fresh perspective. But before you pick one, make sure to visit their website and check out their statement of beliefs.

CrossRiver has several Bible studies by solid teachers like Andy Lee, Debra L. Butterfield and Lindsey Bell to name a few. We are confident in their teaching, but please visit their websites yourself to make sure their beliefs line up with Scripture.

4. Will the study draw you closer to God?

The purpose of doing a Bible study is to grow closer to God. Not just in knowledge, but in putting the things we learn into practice. Make sure the study helps you better understand God and his redemptive power.

5. Pray about it.

Man may have put the words down on paper, but they were divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit. Jesus was the Sacrifice the Scripture talks about and God the Father alone knows the plans He has for you. Ultimately they are the only Ones who can reveal Themselves to you through the Word.
