A great first novel for author Liisa Eyerly! Amazing attention to details of the time, great character deveopment, and an interesting story to boot! It was fun to read a historical fiction christian-based mystery. Well done! I look forward to reading the next two in this series and I’d definitely recommend reading this book!

  2. Debra Allard

I absolutely loved this book. Obedient Unto Death has great writing, great descriptions, great characters, and a plot that kept me reading late into the night. I love historicals because of learning about times gone by; the way people dressed, their surroundings, and their typical behaviors. This book made me feel like I was journeying with the characters in the second century (after Jesus died) to solve a murder. Throughout the story, I was fearful for the Christians who met in home churches and were persecuted. The plot begins with Benjamin dying unexpectedly during a home church meeting, and Sabina sets out to learn how he died, why he died, and who did it. On the last page, I craved more of the characters because I came to admire them, especially Sabina, Apollos, Yechiel, Portia, and Livia. And the apostle who shows up in the story. I hope there’s a sequel. I’d love to read more from Ms. Eyerling,

I was drawn in right from the get go and didn’t want to put the book down.
The descriptive imagery made me feel as if I were there with Sabina in Ephesus, every step of the way.
I appreciated the insight into what life could have been like for the first Christians under rule of the Roman Empire.
If you are looking for an intriguing and engaging read, I would highly recommend this book!

  4. Robin Melvin

This is a story with mystery & intrigue. I like the main character, Sabina. She is a woman who steps out of society’s smothering expectations & risks her life for her faith & her friends. I also enjoyed seeing the culture of the city of Ephesus. The author did extensive research and took great care to bring it to life.

In 2022, Liisa Everly released her first novel entitled, “Obedient unto
death”. Published by a US publishing company that distributes “Christian
books for women”, “Obedient unto death” can be located within the genre
of historical Christian fiction. The novel presents a murder mystery set
in ancient Ephesus. The mystery that must be solved involves three
questions: (i) who murdered a scribe and member of a small, but growing,
Christian community? (ii) how can Sabina, a Christian widow, prove that
the pastor of this fledgling community, has been wrongfully arrested by
her Roman magistrate father, and (iii) can Sabina solve the mystery
before her pastor is sentenced to death?

As indicated earlier, this book is historical Christian fiction and
therefore, it is more than just a mystery novel. The time period is an
important element of the story. Through the descriptions of Ephesus, the
culture, and the way of life, Liisa Eyerly reveals the detailed research
she has undertaken to provide a highly visual context for the plot. In
addition, Liisa Eyerly exposes the reader to the ideas of both
Gnosticism and Christianity and the challenges of the early Christian
    Church at this time.

Further, given that this is a novel for women readers, as the story
unfolds, the reader learns more about Sabina with respect to her status
as a Christian widow. The reader learns of the barriers faced by women
and especially by widows at that time. The reader also learns of
Sabina’s determination and there is much to be admired about the way in
which she holds fast to her Christian principles and seeks justice for
    her friend and pastor.

It’s exciting to read a first novel. I was intrigued by the title,
enjoyed learning more about the early Christian Church, and was
delighted to engage with a positive female character. “Obedient unto
death” makes a special contribution to the genre of historical Christian
fiction and I look forward to future novels written by Liisa Everly.
